Wood Flooring Installation Guide: Preparation and Laying Methods

Wood flooring reacts to moisture, temperature and the condition of the surface beneath it. Careful assessment and preparation are therefore central to the installation process. This guide outlines how engineered and solid wood floors are commonly prepared and laid, while the product manufacturer’s instructions remain the final authority.

Confirm the product and method

Identify whether the floor is engineered or solid wood, the board construction, joint type and approved installation methods. Floating, full-surface bonded and mechanically fixed installations have different subfloor and product requirements. A method should be selected before materials are ordered because it affects underlay, adhesive, trims, moisture control and floor height.

Condition and inspect the boards

Store unopened packs flat in the installation area under normal occupied conditions for the period stated by the manufacturer. Do not assume every wood floor requires the same acclimatisation time. Inspect boards in good light before laying, mixing boards from several packs to balance natural variation in colour and grain. Set aside damaged or unsuitable boards before they are fixed.

Assess the subfloor

  • The surface must be clean, sound, dry and sufficiently flat for the board dimensions and joint system.
  • Concrete and screeds require an appropriate moisture assessment. Where specified, use the compatible moisture-control system.
  • Timber subfloors must be secure, well ventilated where relevant and free from excessive movement.
  • Existing coverings should only remain when the flooring manufacturer expressly permits it.
  • Confirm that underfloor heating temperatures, start-up procedure and controls are compatible with the chosen wood floor.

Plan the layout

Measure the room and calculate the likely width of the first and last rows. Adjust the starting line to avoid an impractically narrow final row. Plan around door frames, hearths, columns and adjoining floors. Wood normally needs a continuous expansion space around walls and fixed objects, with additional movement joints in larger or complex areas as specified by the maker.

The board direction is often chosen to follow the longest dimension or the main light source, but structural requirements and visual transitions can take priority. Herringbone and other patterns need accurate centre lines and a balanced starting area.

How wood flooring is laid

Floating installation

A suitable vapour-control layer and/or underlay is placed over the prepared subfloor as the product requires. Boards are joined to one another without being fixed through to the subfloor. Rows are staggered by at least the minimum stated by the manufacturer, and spacers maintain the perimeter gap. The finished floor must remain free to move, so it is not trapped beneath fixed cabinetry or pinched by trims.

Bonded installation

Compatible adhesive is spread onto the subfloor with the specified trowel and coverage. Boards are placed within the adhesive’s working time, kept to the setting-out line and weighted or rolled if required. Adhesive contamination is removed from the face using the approved method before it cures.

Mechanically fixed installation

Where approved, boards are secret-nailed or stapled to a suitable timber base using the specified fixing angle, length and spacing. Services beneath the floor must be located before fixing. The board profile and thickness must be suitable for this method.

Edges, doors and transitions

Door linings are normally undercut so boards can slide beneath while retaining movement space. Pipes receive an adequate clearance concealed by suitable covers. Threshold and expansion profiles bridge changes in level or separate areas without locking the wood in place. Skirting or scotia covers the perimeter gap but is fixed to the wall, not through the floor.

After installation

Keep the room within the stated temperature and humidity range. Observe adhesive curing times before normal use. Sweep or vacuum with a hard-floor tool to remove installation grit, then follow the surface finish instructions for initial cleaning. Protect the new floor from wet trades, sharp wheels and heavy dragging.

Common problems to prevent

  • Laying before moisture levels and heating conditions are stable.
  • Using an incompatible underlay, adhesive or surface treatment.
  • Failing to provide or preserve expansion space.
  • Repeating board patterns rather than blending packs.
  • Starting without a layout plan, leading to narrow rows or awkward door details.
  • Fixing trims through a floating floor and restricting movement.
